Team B.C. captures silver medal at U-15 National Flag Championships

Team B.C. captures silver medal at U-15 National Flag Championships

Football BC would like to congratulate Coach Mike Pauls and his B.C. Team for capturing the silver medal at the 2009 National U-15 Flag Championships held at Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario from July 24 - 26, 2009.

The team, comprised of a handful of players from the Vancouver College Fighting Irish's 2008 grade eight provincial championship team, advanced to the national championships after going undefeated during the provincial flag tournament and dethroning the defending BC champions from Coquitlam to earn them the opportunity to represent British Columbia in Ottawa.

The team was also representing the BCCFA's Westside Warriors and was officially known as the Westside Warrior Packers during their journey to a silver medal victory. The players involved with the team were Liam Mahara, Liam Mackay, Miguel Banting, Alex Kucher, Luke Frigon, Andrew Pauls, Eli Pauls (injured prior to Nationals), and Paul Glambinskas (alternate).

"This is the first provincial title for the Westside Warriors program since the 90's and [the team] was very well supported from the families and executives of the Westside program," said Coach Pauls in an e-mail to Football BC.

The B.C. boys were dominant during their run at the national championships sweeping the round robin portion of the tournament by out-scoring their opponents 121-44 in three games before posting convincing victories over New Brunswick and Quebec in the Quarter-Final and Semi-Final, respectively, to earn a berth in the Gold Medal game against the defending champions from Ontario.

Despite facing an unbeaten Ontario squad in the Final that had won all their previous matches by an average of nearly 40 points, Team B.C. put forth a valiant effort holding a lead late into the contest before being narrowly defeated by a final score of 30-28.

"The Irish players played like champions and represented Vancouver College with pride and determination," added Coach Pauls. "I am very proud to have coached such a great group of players last fall in winning the grade 8 championship and now this spring and summer to a second provincial championship and then the national silver medal."

Silver lining for three B.C. boys

Football BC would like to congratulate a trio of B.C. players for their part in helping Canada capture silver at the inaugural 2009 International Federation of American Football (IFAF) World Junior Championships in Canton, Ohio.

Jesse Briggs (Kelowna), Carson Rockhill (Parksville), and Alex Anthony (Victoria) were part of the Canadian crew that knocked off New Zealand and Japan en route to the final before falling in the championship game to the USA. Canada entered the tournament as the number one seed thanks to impressive showings at the previous three NFL Global Junior Championships.

The next IFAF Junior World Championship is expected to be held in 2012 and then every two years following that.
