BCCFA season concludes with Super Sunday of action

The BC Community Football Association had the spotlight all to themselves this past Sunday as they were the last association to host amateur football action in British Columbia in 2009 and they did not disappoint with five tightly contested match-ups at McLeod Stadium in Langley, BC. In the end, five teams emerged from the weekend with the right to call themselves the 2009 BCCFA 12-man provincial championships.

Atom Division:
Kelowna-Mission Vipers def. South Delta Rams 24-22

The Kelowna-Mission Vipers built up a 24-0 lead after three quarters but the Rams made it interesting in the final quarter scoring 22 unanswered points. Unfortunately, the comeback was not enough as the Vipers held on for the victory.

Pee Wee Division:
Abbotsford Falcons def. Langley Mavericks 19-14

The Abbotsford Falcons built up a 19-6 lead after three quarters but the Mavericks nearly capped off an improbable comeback in the final quarter. A late fumble by the Falcons gave the Mavericks a chance to go for a late touchdown to win the game but the Falcons defence came up huge to deny the Mavericks with no time left to capture the Pee Wee title.

Jr. Bantam Division:
Victoria Renegades def. Chilliwack Giants 43-16

The Victoria Renegades put on a scoring clinic building up a 29-8 lead at the half-time and coasted to a 43-16 win over the Chilliwack Giants.

Bantam Division:
Coquitlam Chargers def. Abbotsford Falcons 7-3

The Falcons program is denied their second title of the day as the Coquitlam Chargers manage to out-last the Falcons in a tight, low-scoring affair in the Bantam final. Chargers QB James Dowdall is the only player to score a touchdown while the defence came up huge in the dying seconds picking off a pass and allowing the Chargers to run out the clock.

Midget Division:
Chilliwack Giants def. Nanaimo Redmen 20-10

Chilliwack's Midget team earned a measure of revenge for their Jr. Bantam team as they knocked off the Nanaimo Redmen to earn the Midget championship. The Redmen drew first blood connecting on an 18-year field goal to take a 3-0 lead after the first quarter but the Giants rebound with 13 unanswered points to close out the half. After allowing the Redmen to pull within three points after the third quarter, Chilliwack's Josh Hayden seals the deal for his team with a 78-yard interception return for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter.

Football BC would like to congratulate all the 12-man provincial champions as well as all the teams that participated in Community football in the 2009 season. We look forward to seeing you again in 2010.

Centennial Centaurs capture first championship in 43 years topping W.J. Mouat Hawks in Subway Bowl Championship

The 2009 BC High School Football season ended in style with the Centennial Centaurs battling the W.J. Mouats in a tight, high-scoring affair this past Saturday at McLeod Stadium in Langley, BC in a contest that was broadcasted live on Rogers Sportsnet Pacific and The Team 1040 Sports Radio.

The Centaurs captured the AAA Senior Varsity championship - the school's first title since they opened in 1966 - by out-lasting the Hawks 39-36 in a game that came right down to the wire. It was a highly successful weekend for the Centaurs program that also saw them capture the AAA Junior Varsity title on Friday afternoon with a 24-22 win over the St. Thomas More Knights.

It was also a very successful weekend for Victoria's Mt. Douglas Rams program who made the most of their trip to the mainland this weekend by walking away with a pair of titles. The Rams knocked off the Windsor Dukes 41-20 on Saturday afternoon to claim the AA Senior Varsity championship while the Rams also claimed the AA Junior Varsity championship with a 61-21 win over the Mission Roadrunners on Friday afternoon.

In the Grade 8 Tier I Division, it was Lord Tweedsmuir winning 3-0 with an overtime field goal in a defensive struggle against the St. Thomas More Knights. In the Grade 8 Tier II Division, it was the Handsworth Royals knocking off the Hugh Boyd Trojans by a final score of 14-12.

Football BC would like to congratulate all champions as well as all the participants in BC High School Football in 2009. We look forward to seeing you again in 2010.

"Royal" treatment for Handsworth football players at Qwest Field

Members of the Handsworth Royals football team were on hand at Qwest Field on Sunday prior to the NFL contest between the Seattle Seahawks versus the San Francisco 49ers.

The Royals were selected to be part of a special pre-game ceremony honouring their Canadian fans at the Seahawks contest. The players carried out the Canadian flag onto the field in a pre-game ceremony that also feaured the RCMP Colour Guard as well as the Canadian National Anthem being sung by Mark Donnelly, who is a fixture at Vancouver Canucks hockey games.
