Football BC mourns loss of Cal Murphy
Football BC would like to express our condolences to the friends and family of Cal Murphy who passed away this past Saturday, February 18 at the age of 79.
Most known for his time as the head coach of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Murphy had a strong legacy in British Columbia before making it big in the CFL where he posted an illustrious record of 44-21-1, was a two-time CFL coach of the year (1983 & 1984) and was a part of nine Grey Cup winning teams.
Murphy's playing career began with the Vancouver College Fighting Irish followed by time spent with the UBC Thunderbirds and CYO Red Raiders. He also had a short stint with the BC Lions as a defensive back in 1956 before embarking on the start of an amazing coaching career right here in the province of British Columbia.
His first coaching gig came with the Notre Dame Jugglers in 1956 where he was the first ever head coach of that program. He then moved on to coach with his alma mater at Vancouver College from 1960 to 1961. While with the Fighting Irish, he guided the team to their only undefeated season against the top American high school teams in the Pacific Northwest.
Cal also served as an assistant coach for the BC Lions in 1974 and as head coach for the 1975 and 1976 seasons. He is the only BC High School football player to become a professional football head coach.
Murphy is a member of the Vancouver College Hall of Fame and was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 2004 as a builder. He was awarded the 125th Anniversary Medal of Canada in 1993 and the Bob Ackles Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2010 Orange Helmet Awards banquet.
