January 2010 | Issue #18  Governing Body for Amateur Football in BC

Welcome back!

Football BC hopes that everybody had a very happy holiday break. It was certainly a very well-deserved R&R time for those who were involved with local football in 2009.

The football season might not have wrapped up yet for everyone, but we are certainly looking forward to the 2010 season already at Football BC.

Next week, we are expecting to announce training camp details for Senior Bowl and on January 27th, we are hoping to announce the tryout details for our Under-18 Team BC that will be competing at the 2010 Football Canada Cup in July.

All the latest news and information will be made available in future editions of The Huddle as well as on our website at www.playfootball.bc.ca.

Stayed tuned!

Football BC announces SmartCheck Equipment program

Football BC is very pleased to be teaming up with BC Lions Equipment Manager Ken ‘Kato’ Kasuya and Assistant Equipment Manager Dave Henderson this fall in a special Visual Equipment Inspection series dubbed the SmartCheck program.

Kato and Dave will be traveling to several locations around the province and will be visiting local amateur teams in that area (BC Community teams, high school teams and junior teams) to provide a visual inspection to ensure that clubs and teams can best utilize their resources when it comes to re-certifying their equipment.

Teams are encouraged to make sure their equipment personnel are available so that they can ask these two highly-qualified individuals any questions they may have. Registration is required for each session. A complete list of all scheduled dates and locations will be made available on our website. For more information, please visit www.playfootball.bc.ca.

Kato has been a mainstay with the BC Lions for almost the last three decades. A graduate of Templeton Secondary School in East Vancouver, Kato joined the Lions organization as a ball boy at age 13 and was hired as an assistant equipment manager in 1984 before rising to the ranks of equipment manager shortly thereafter. Kato has been a strong supporter and partner of Football BC assisting at countless amateur football camps as well as with Football BC functions such as Senior Bowl and Play with the Pros.

Henderson is a self-described football lifer after beginning with his playing days in the GSL and with Argyle in high school. He first began working on the equipment side of football in 1995 in the GSL and was the equipment manager at the Western Canadian All-Star Football Camp at SFU in 1996. In 2001, he began assisting Kato at Lions training camps and game days – a role he still currently performs. In addition to his work with the Lions, Henderson looks after the equipment and serves as a coach at Carson Graham Secondary School in North Vancouver. Henderson has also been a strong supporter and partner of Football BC over the years. In 2009, he represented Football BC in Ottawa during a Football Canada Certification seminar on maintaining and fitting equipment.

Thank you for your nominations!

Football BC would like to thank everybody who submitted nominations for the 2009 Community Coach of the Year and the 2009 Scholastic Coach of the Year.

The selection committee had an opportunity to review all the submissions during the holiday break and have made their decision as to which coaches will receive the respective honours this season.

The winners will be notified shortly to allow them to make arrangements to attend the 2010 Orange Helmet Awards Dinner where they will be honoured for their hard work, dedication and football achievements in 2009. The winners of this year’s Pioneer Awards will also be notified shortly.

The 2010 Orange Helmet Awards Dinner will be held on Friday, April 9th at the new Vancouver Convention Centre in support of BC Amateur Football. This year’s keynote speaker will be former CFL and NFL quarterback Doug Flutie while the Master of Ceremonies will be his brother Darren Flutie, a former prominent CFL wide receiver.

Football BC congratulates SFU Clan player Deslaurier

Football BC would like to congratulate Simon Fraser University’s Anthony Deslaurier for signing his first pro contract with the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts. Deslauriers’ contracts will last through the 2012 season.

Deslauriers, 22, was originally drafted by the Argos in the sixth round (42nd overall) of the 2009 CFL Canadian Draft. He opted not to attend training camp last season and instead returned to SFU for his final year of eligibility.

The 6’0”, 185 lbs. defensive back from Surrey, B.C. played one season with the UBC Thunderbirds in 2005 before transferring to SFU where he played from 2007-009. Deslauriers began his college career as a wide receiver before converting to defensive back for the 2008 season. It was then when he truly blossomed into one of the elite players in the Canada West.

He was named a First-Team Canada All-Star and a Second-Team All-Canadian in 2008. Last season, he was named a First-Team All-Canadian as well as a Canada West All-Star at safety.

Deslauriers is just the latest in a long list of Clan players who have gone on to careers in the Canadian Football League. Among the most notable former Clan players to gone on to play in the CFL are: Bret Anderson (BC), Doug Brown (WPG), Luca Congi (SSK), Nick Hebeler (BC, TOR, SSK), Sean Millington (EDM, WPG, BC, TOR), and Lui Passaglia (BC).

The SFU Clan Football team competes in the NCAA’s Division II Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) and is a member of Football BC.
