Olson tabbed to lead T-Birds
The UBC Thunderbirds are reaching back into their glory days with the naming of former player Shawn Olson as the new head coach of their football program. Olson replaces Ted Goveia who was let go at the end of the 2009 season after the team failed to make the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year under his tenure. There will be high hopes and expectations for the Surrey-native Olson who had spent the previous three seasons with the SFU Clan, including last year when he was the team's full-time assistant coach, quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator. The Thunderbirds finished last season with a 3-5 record in the Canada West but that includes a forfeit win over SFU and a default win over Manitoba. Olson is no stranger to success during his last run with the T-Birds as a player. He was the quarterback of the team the last time the Thunderbirds won the Vanier Cup back in 1997, one of three national championships for the T-Birds after wins in 1982 and 1986. He was also a Canada West All-Star from 1998-2000 and sits second on the all-time passing list in UBC football history. Olson, a former Surrey Ram, also played professional football in Austria where he led the Vienna Vikings to three straight Austrian Champions and two Eurobowl Championships in 2004 and 2005. Football BC would like to congratulate Shawn on his appointment and wish him the best of luck in the 2010 season. |

Football BC would like to congratulate Simon Fraser University’s Ray Wladichuk for signing a pro contract with the CFL’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats. The Vernon, BC native was originally a fifth round draft pick in 2009 (38th overall) of the Ti-Cats and made the team out of training camp in 2009 but opted to return to SFU for his fourth season with the Clan. The 6’1”, 190 lbs. defensive back appeared in seven games for SFU in 2009 registering 22 tackles and one interception. Football BC wishes Wladichuk the best of luck in his professional football endeavours. |
