Provincial ID Camps begin this Sunday (January 29) in Nanaimo

The first Provincial ID camp session of 2012 will take place this Sunday, January 29 at Merle Logan Field in Nanaimo. This weekend’s schedule is as follows:

Team BC tryout: 4 pm to 6 pm
Prep to be the Best: 6 pm to 7:30 pm
Senior Bowl tryout: 6 to 8 pm

The cost to participate in each session/tryout is $10 per player.

All players that are attending one of these sessions should fill out the PLAYER INFORMATION section in this form and bring a copy with you to hand in during registration. DO NOT fill out the Player Evaluation - Testing section as that section will be filled in by a coach representing Football BC during your tryout.

Upcoming camp dates are as follows:

  • Northern BC (Prince George) - Saturday, February 4
  • Lower Mainland (Richmond) - Saturday, February 4 
    & Saturday, February 11
  • Okanagan (Kelowna) - Sunday, February 12
  • Vancouver Island (Victoria) - Sunday, February 19
  • Fraser Valley (Abbotsford) - Monday, February 20 & Tuesday, February 21

Team BC announces coaching staff for 2012 Football Canada Cup

The coaching staff for Team BC, the provincial under-18 provincial tackle team to compete at the 2012 Football Canada Cup in July, was officially announced on Wednesday morning.

The seven-person staff features six returning members from last year’s bronze medal squad including head coach and offensive line coach Tom Kudaba. Joining Kudaba as returning members are: Offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Jay Prepchuk; Defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Dino Geremia; Receivers coach Mark Townsend; Defensive backs coach Alexis Sanschagrin; and Defensive line coach Ray Moon.

The lone newcomer to the group this year is Jerome Erdman (University of British Columbia) as special teams coordinator and running backs coach. Erdman, who is currently the defensive coordinator for the UBC T-Birds, is a former Grey Cup winning player with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 1984.

The 2012 Football Canada Cup is slated to be held at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario from July 15 - 21, 2012. Players must be born in 1995 or 1996 to be eligible to compete. A schedule for Team BC tryout sessions can be found here.


Date and location set for 2012 Orange Helmet Awards Dinner

Football BC and the BC Lions have confirmed the date and location for the 2012 Orange Helmet Awards Dinner. The dinner, which will honour the 2011 provincial champions in amateur football, will be held on March 30, 2012 at the Westin Bayshore in Vancouver.

Legendary Frank Smith headed for UBC Sports Hall of Fame

One of the most renowned coaches in the history of Canadian Interuniversity Sport, Frank Smith, will be formally inducted into the UBC Sports Hall of Fame at the annual Big Block Awards and Sports Hall of Fame Banquet taking place on April 4 at the Vancouver Convention Centre.

Smith coached the Thunderbirds for 21 seasons from 1974 to 1994 leading the team to a record 126 victories including five Canada West Championships, four Vanier Cup appearances and two Vanier Cup Championships (1982 and 1986).

Smith is a two-time winner of the Frank Tindall Award as CIS Coach of the Year (1978 and 1979) and went on to coach with the Saskatchewan Roughriders (1995) and BC Lions (1996-2000) following his time at UBC.

Smith was previously inducted to the UBC Sports Hall of Fame in the Team category back in 2003 alongside members of his 1982 Vanier Cup winning team.

Grey Cup champion Angus Reid to visit Okanagan Area Schools - February 13 to 17

Grey Cup Champion and ESTEEM Team Youth Motivational Speaker, Angus Reid, will be touring to Okanagan area schools from February 13 - 17. Don’t miss your chance to meet a champion both on and off the field.

There are nine schools currently booked for a session with only five spots remaining. For interested schools, the entire program is valued at $1050 but if you reserve now you can qualify for subsidies provided by Sport Canada to the first 500 schools that apply each school year (subsidized public school tour rates are only $595).

The current schedule of visits is as follows:

February 13: Summerland (Summerland MS, Trout Creek ES, 1 spot remaining)
February 14: Penticton (KVR, McNicoll, Skaha Lake)
February 15: Kelowna (Rutland Elementary, 2 spots remaining)

The UBC Thunderbirds have released their schedule of upcoming camps in the 2012 calendar year. A full description of each camp along with costs and registration information can be found here.

2012 Football Canada Coaches Association (FCCA) Convention - March 24-25, 2012

Football Canada, in partnership with and the Ontario Football Alliance, will be hosting the 2012 Football Canada Coaches Association (FCCA) Convention on Saturday, March 24 through Sunday, March 25 at Corpus Christi Secondary School in Burlington Ontario.

The FCCA Convention is a coaching development opportunity which features presentations from minor, junior, Canadian and American university, as well as CFL and NFL coaches. NCCP workshops will also be conducted as part of the event.

The Football Academy continues - sign up for the next session today!

Aspiring players aged 14 to 17 who want to receive high level football training are encouraged to take part in The Football Academy. Registration is on-going.

Football BC is supporting this program to enhance each players' skill set and performance on the field through proven techniques designed to improve each participants' 40-yard dash, pro agility, vertical, speed, acceleration, injury prevention as well as overall strength and fitness.
