Lightning Safety Tips

Football BC would like to remind all our members to be cautious and safe this summer during all practices and games particularly when it comes to dealing with weather conditions.

Last week we presented tips on dealing with the heat which you can see by viewing our newsletter archive.

This week we offer some suggestions, taken from the Environment Canada website, on what to do if you find yourself caught outdoors in a lightning storm.
  • If you can hear thunder, you are within striking distance of lightning. Take shelter immediately, preferably in a house or all-metal automobile
  • Stay away from tall objects such as trees, poles, wires and fences
  • There is no safe place outdoors during a thunderstorm. Once in a safe location, remain there for 30 minutes after the last rumble of thunder is heard before resuming your outdoor activities
  • People who have been struck by lightning do not carry an electrical charge and can be safely handled, but victims may be suffering from burns or shock and should receive medical attention immediately
  • If you come across someone who has been struck, call for medical assistance immediately and, if breathing has stopped, administer mouth-to-mouth or cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR)

For more Lightning Safety information, visit Environment Canada's website.

Free, mandatory concussion education course codes now available for your club from Football BC

With the 2012 season fast approaching, Football BC would like to remind all its members of the updates to its concussion policy which now requires all coaches to complete a mandatory online course found at http://bcfootball.concussioneducation.ca/default.php.

Completion of the course will satisfy the yearly education program component of the Football BC concussion policy which was put into effect back in June 2010.

Each coach will receive a unique PIN number and password from their club team. PIN numbers and passwords should be requested from Football BC from the club's president or primary contact (such as a head coach) who can then forward the codes to the rest of their organization.  To request a code, visit http://bcfootball.concussioneducation.ca/default.php, click "Request" and fill out the appropriate information in the form.
