BCFC announces 2012 schedule; new Tier 2 league to begin play in April

The British Columbia Football Conference (BCFC) announced on Wednesday the release of their 2012 regular season schedule which will feature a brand new format as the six-team league will adopt an unbalanced schedule.

The schedule remains a 10-week regular season but will feature the "top tier" teams facing each other three times as opposed to just twice as in years past. For example the Vancouver Island Raiders, the six-time BCFC defending champions, will play three games each against the Okanagan Sun and the Langley Rams.

Kickoff for the season will be on Saturday, August 4. The winner of the Cullen Cup this season will host the 2012 Canadian Bowl on November 10, 2012.

The Raiders, who will open their season in Westshore facing the Rebels, will be looking to host their third straight Canadian championship after winning the national title in 2006 and 2009 as the host team.

For more details and to see the schedule, click here.

The BCFC also announced on Wednesday the creation of a new Tier 2 league that will begin play in April.

The "BCFC Tier 2" is designed as a developmental league for the Tier 1 BCFC and will be open to players between the ages of 18 to 20. The season will run from April to late May making it the only tackle football played in the spring in all of BC.

The BCFC Tier 2 will partner with four individual clubs all on the lower mainland: The North Delta Longhorns, the Richmond Raiders, the Vancouver Trojans and the Burnaby Lions.

Each club will have a specific catchment area in which they are allowed to recruit.

All games will be played at either John Oliver Park in North Delta or Minoru Park in Richmond. The first Tier 2 games begin Saturday, April 7.
