Shrum’s Last Stand?
Football fans in the Metro Vancouver area might want to mark Saturday, October 17th on their calendar and plan to make a trip to the campus of Simon Fraser University. Not only does that date mark the 32nd ever Shrum Bowl contest between hated cross-town rivals the UBC Thunderbirds and the SFU Clan, but if recent reports are any indication, it may be the final chapter in the annual clash – at least in the immediate future.
On September 17th, the Canadian Press reported that the athletics program at SFU was being placed on probation for the 2009-10 season by Canada West – a move that stems from SFU’s recent successful bid to enter into the NCAA’s Division II Great Northwest Athletic Conference in time for the 2011-12 season. The story got more interesting six days later when SFU announced
plans to expedite their entry into the Great Northwest Athletic Conference with play beginning next season in 2010-11. The move to the NCAA will include the University’s football program, making this season the final year for the Clan in the CIS Canada West.
While it is possible that the Shrum Bowl becomes resurrected following SFU’s entry into NCAA’s Division II, this year’s version of the Shrum Bowl could very well be the last time that SFU and UBC plays a meaningful game – at least as far as league standings are concerned.
The all-time Shrum Bowl series is knotted at 15-15-1 and while it would be a tremendous shame were arguably the best provincial football rivalry to fall by the wayside, if this truly is the last time that these two teams get to duke it out for cross-town bragging rights, you can be sure that this game will live up to all the hype and more.
Tickets for the Shrum Bowl start are available for $10 for the general public and $5 for SFU students. Kickoff is at 1pm. Tickets are available at the SFU Burnaby Campus bookstore or online on the
SFU Athletics
website.
The UBC T-Birds are organizing a Shrum Bus for the game which includes transportation to and from SFU as well as a game ticket for $15. To reserve a spot, contact
