BC High School Football game of the week preview - Lord Tweedsmuir at Mt. Boucherie

By Michiko Araki

Friday, October 24
Apple Bowl
Kickoff at 6:30 pm PT
Watch online at

The Lord Tweedsmuir Panthers (3-1) will visit the Mt. Boucherie Bears (3-2) in this week's BC High School Game of the Week.

The Panthers, coming off of their first ever win at the senior varsity level against the W.J. Mouat Hawks last week, will look to continue that exciting momentum with a win against the Bears. In last week's 45-16 victory over the Hawks, K.J. Johnson and Caleb Abraham were standout players for the Panthers. Johnson caught a touchdown pass and ran for another, while Abraham rushed 19 times for 129 yards and two touchdowns while returning an interception for another touchdown.

Mt. Boucherie had a bye last week, but are coming off a 24-13 win two weeks ago over those same Hawks. In that win, the Bears showed their defensive prowess led by two sacks from Brock Zeleniski, a pick by Kache Kopec, and two fumble recoveries. On the offensive side, Zac Callaghan led the rushing efforts with 18 carries for 109 yards, while Zeleniski had two carries for 65 yards and a touchdown.

BCFC Cullen Cup Championship: Langley Rams at Okanagan Sun

By Michiko Araki

Sunday, October 26
Apple Bowl
Kickoff at 1 pm PT

The BC Football Conference (BCFC) Cullen Cup title is on the line this Sunday when the Langley Rams visit the Okanagan Sun at the Apple Bowl in a matchup of the top two teams in the conference.

After a convincing 47-16 win against the Vancouver Island Raiders in the semi-final, the Sun, who finished in first place in the regular season standings, will look to knock off a Rams team that has consistently found themselves in the title picture for the past few seasons. In their win, the Sun showed their strong passing and running game, as they finished with 243 yards through the air and 233 on the ground.

Several players to look out for will be BCFC rushing leader Alex Bradley, who carried eight times for 79 yards and two touchdowns, and Cam Bedore, who went 12-of-18 for 226 yards and threw two touchdown passes to Thomas Huber and Lerone Robinson. Defensively, the Sun recorded six turnovers and seven sacks with Zac Ironstand leading the way with three sacks.

On the other hand, the Rams weren't as dominant in last week's semi-final winning by a slim 48-46 score against the Kamloops Broncos. The Rams were led by Nathan Lund, who carried 15 times for 185 yards and a touchdown, and quarterback Jordan McCarty who only completed eight passes but collected 232 yards, threw three touchdowns, and rushed for a score.

In their matchups this season, the Rams handed the Sun their only loss this year back in August with a 33-20 win. However, in their latest matchup in late September, the Sun defeated the Rams 37-20. This is the fourth consecutive year that the Rams have reached the Cullen Cup final, and they will look to beat the Sun when it counts the most.

UBC vs University of Calgary preview

By Michiko Araki

Saturday, October 25
McMahon Stadium
Kickoff at 1 pm PT
Watch online at

After a close win at home against the Regina Rams last Saturday the UBC Thunderbirds (2-4) will be back on the road to face the University of Calgary Dinos (5-1) as they cling to their hopes for a playoff berth.

In last week's game, the Thunderbirds were able to edge out the Rams thanks in large part to quarterback Carson Williams, who finished 20-for-32 for 256 yards and three touchdown passes - two of which were caught by Niko Jakobs and one by Marcus Davis. Jakobs finished the game with three catches for 32 yards and two touchdowns, while Davis would finish with 139 all-purpose yards and a 37-yard touchdown catch. Williams, meanwhile, was named the Canada West Offensive Player of the Week.

The Dinos, on the other hand, have been the team to beat all season as they are undefeated against Canada West opponents this season (their lone loss was due to a forfeit as a result of the use of an ineligible player). In last week's 52-37 win against the Alberta Golden Bears, quarterback Andrew Buckley stole the show, accounting for nearly 500 yards of offence by throwing 307 yards and two touchdowns, and adding 172 rushing yards and three scores. On the defensive side, the Dinos were led by Adam Konar who recorded nine tackles.

The Dinos defeated the Thunderbirds 59-11 in their lone head-to-head meeting this season back on September 13 spoiling UBC's Homecoming.

SFU vs South Dakota preview

By Michiko Araki

Saturday, October 18
McArthur Field
Kickoff at 1 pm PT
Watch online at

After recording their second win of the season against the South Dakota School of Mines Hardrockers, the SFU Clan (2-5; Conference 2-1) are back on the road one last time this season when they take on the Western Oregon Wolves (1-4; Conference 1-1).

In last week's 53-31 win against the South Dakota School of Mines Hardrockers, the Clan offence felt a spark and scored 27 consecutive points to shut out the Hardrockers in the second half for the come-from-behind win. Once again, ex-Centennial players Lemar Durant and Justin Buren led the offence for the Clan, recording three touchdowns and two touchdowns, respectively. Buren led the way in receiving with nine catches for 123 yards, while running back Cole Tudor led the team with 93 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Ryan Stanford finished the game 28-of-36 for 372 yards and four touchdown passes after his first start in the last two weeks. On the defensive side, standout Jordan Herdman led the team once again with 15 tackles and two sacks.

The Wolves, coming off a 24-20 loss against the Central Washington Wildcats, will rely on Tyrell Williams, who recorded a career high 171 receiving yards on five catches and one touchdown in the defeat. Quarterback Ryan Bergman also threw for 412 yards last week, capping his sixth 400-yard game of his career, going 24-of-41 and two touchdowns. However, Bergman was sacked four times and intercepted three times, and the Clan defence will look to capitalize on his mistakes in this week's game. On the defensive side, the Wolves will look to Breeon Moreno and Austin Spencer, who both recorded ten tackles in last week's game.

The Clan will look to avenge their 38-14 loss in their homecoming game at the beginning of the season to the Wolves.
