With heavy hearts

Hector Rossetti The BC Football community lost one of their own on Thursday, August 20, 2009 with the passing of Hector Rossetti. He was 84.

Rossetti was a builder of Football BC and was a very well-respected high school football coach and history teacher in North Vancouver for over 35 years.

Rossetti was heavily involved with the football program at North Vancouver High School first as a team sponsor and assistant coach before later becoming the team's head coach.

Some of the notable individuals who had the privilege of playing under Rossetti include the late Sonny Homer - a former BC Lions great and Wall of Fame inductee - and the late Harry Jerome - a Canadian track and field star and Olympian.

Rossetti was predeceased by his wife, Kay, in 2003 and is survived by son Tony, daughter Linda, niece Patti, and nephews Paul, Tony and Bob.

A celebration of life for Rossetti will be held on Friday, September 18th at the Seymour Golf and Country Club from 3:30pm to 5:30pm. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Lions Gate Hospital Palliative Care Ward.

Timbits Football Camp is this coming Monday

Staying in the Vancouver-area this long weekend?

If you're looking for a fun activity for the kids before sending them back to school, then check out the BC Lions Timbits Football Camp on Monday, September 7th (Labour Day). This free camp offers kids aged 6 to 12 the opportunity to go through stations led by current BC Lions players and learn new skills related to each position. Kids can also get autographs from their favourite players.

The event takes place at the BC Lions Surrey Training Facility located at 10605 - 135th Street in Surrey, BC and will be held rain or shine. Participants should be prepared for any weather conditions and for play on a grass/field turf.

"Timbits Camp allows kids to get up close and personal with their BC Lions heroes as players run them through numerous drills," said Jamie Taras, former BC Lions great and currently the team's Director of Community Relations. "The day promises to be fun and excited for all involved, regardless of their background in football."

Online pre-registration is required through the BC Lions website at http://www.bclions.com/page/timbitscamp. Event day registration begins at 10am with the camp running from 11am - 1pm.

End summer in style with a day with the BC Lions!

West Nile virus confirmed in the Okanagan

On August 22nd, the BC Centre for Disease Control confirmed the presence of West Nile virus in B.C. for the first time ever in the south Okanagan. The West Nile virus is spread through mosquito bites. We remind everybody to take common-sense precautions to protect themselves from mosquito bites especially when outdoors.

Protective measures include: wearing light-coloured, long-sleeved shirts and long pants; using mosquito repellents; cleaning up areas where mosquitoes like to breed; and getting rid of mosquito-friendly places (cleaning up and emptying containers, cleaning field equipment that collect water, etc.). Try to also avoid being outdoors around dusk or dawn as these times tend to be the most active for mosquitoes carrying the West Nile virus.

When using insect repellent, apply sparingly on exposed skin or on top of clothing (not under), use a light coating only and apply with your hands, and do not use on open wounds or if your skin is irritated. Be sure to read the manufacturer's instructions on the label carefully, including specific instructions pertaining to young children as well as the maximum number of applications per day.

For more information and tips on protective measures, please visit the BC Centre for Disease Control website.
