City of Vancouver seeking input on new Synthetic Turf Field locations

For all people involved in football, here is your opportunity to tell the City of Vancouver where you want to see more fields and playing locations. The City will be hosting several open houses and we are urging everyone who can to attend these open houses and ask the city to make sure that football can be played on the proposed fields. The open houses will allow attendees to learn more about the proposed synthetic turf fields and to make comments on any aspects of the initiative with Park Board staff.

The open houses are being held in order to gather public input into where the next two fields should be built. The following sites have been shortlisted for consideration:

  • Jericho Park (east or west field) –
    1700 Discovery St.

  • Memorial South Park Oval or NW Field –
    41st Avenue at Prince Albert

  • Rupert Park North – Rupert at Kitchener

  • Beaconsfield Park all-weather field –
    Slocan and 17th Ave.

Open houses will be held from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at the following Community Centres:

  • September 23: Renfrew Community Centre,
    2929 E. 22nd Ave.

  • September 24: West Point Grey Community Centre,
    4937 W. 2nd Ave.

  • September 28: Sunset Community Centre,
    6810 Main St.

  • October 1: Hastings Community Centre,
    3096 E. Hastings

Lions honouring amateur football with half-time showcase

The BC Lions will be holding their annual Salute to Amateur Football night on October 2nd when they host the Saskatchewan Roughriders at BC Place and, as in years past, BC’s amateur football prowess will be on display in front of over 30,000 loud and proud football fans during half-time.

During half-time of the CFL contest, five amateur football mini-games will be taking place. The teams that are involved in the half-time are teams from leagues under the BC Community Football Association. The half-time games include the Chilliwack Giants Peewee team vs. the Prince George Peewee team, the Nanaimo Peewee team vs. the Cloverdale Peewee team, the Langley Flag team vs. the Vancouver Trojan Flag team, two flag teams from the GSL squaring off against one another, and the New Westminster Hyacks Atom team facing the North Delta Longhorns Atom team.

“The BC Lions are committed to assisting in the development of football in B.C.,” said Lions’ Director of Community Relations Jamie Taras. “The existing Lions are proud to have players like Sean Whyte, Paris Jackson, Angus Reid, Paul McCallum and Dean Valli on the team – players who are all products of minor football in B.C. By encouraging the development of young players, we hope to see many more local Lions in our future.”

Football BC Executive Director Pat Waslen added: “The BC Lions are tremendous supporters of amateur football in British Columbia and we are very pleased to see them continue to highlight amateur football with their annual half-time salute.”

Special rates for amateur football teams and players are available for this game. For more information, contact Kyle Beattie at the BC Lions at 604.930.5464.
