BC High School Football game of the week preview - W.J. Mouat Hawks at New Westminster Hyacks

By Michiko Araki

Friday, September 12
Mercer Stadium
Kickoff at 7:30 pm PT
Watch online at www.SportsCanada.TV

After a convincing 46-13 win against Robert Bateman in their exhibition opener, the W.J. Mouat Hawks (EX: 1-0) will look to go to continue their winning ways in the exhibition campaign by knocking off the New Westminster Hyacks (EX: 1-1) at Mercer Stadium.

The Hawks will look for leadership from Jacob Dodd, who scored five touchdowns last game, as well as several up-and-coming players in Slater McRae, Reuben Reardon and Dion Pellerin on a team that debuted nine new starters on offence and eight on defence in last week's game.

The Hyacks, whose exhibition season began with a trip to Texas followed by an 11-6 win over the Centennial Centaurs, will need a repeat of their strong defensive performance from last against one of the league's most dangerous offences while also looking to match fire with fire on offence.

SFU vs Western Oregon preview

By Michiko Araki

Saturday, September 13
Swangard Stadium
Kickoff at 1 pm PT
Watch online at

After a closely contested game against the visiting Menlo Oaks last weekend, the SFU Clan (0-1; 0-0 Conference) will play their first Conference game of the new season this Saturday when they host the Western Oregon Wolves (0-1; 0-0 Conference).

The Clan will look for leadership on the offensive side from Kyle Kawamoto, Ante Milanovic-Litre, and Lemar Durant, who were able to score touchdowns for the Clan last Saturday, along with Chris Tolbert who led the team in rushing with 83 yards against the Menlo Oaks. On the defensive side, Eric Murphy and Matt Isherwood both had picks for the Clan, and Jordan Herdman lead the team with 13 tackles.

The Western Oregon Wolves, who opened their season with a non-Conference loss against Division I's Portland State last week, will likely be looking at Paul Revis to help put scores on the board.

Revis was named the GNAC Special Player of the Week after recording 265 all-purpose yards (129 yards on six kick returns and 27 yards on three punt returns). He also caught eight passes for 109 yards, including touchdown catches of 26 and 48 yards.

UBC vs Calgary preview

By Michiko Araki

Friday, September 13
UBC Thunderbird Stadium
Kickoff at 2 pm PT
Watch online at

After starting their season with a disappointing 33-23 loss to the Regina Rams last weekend, the UBC Thunderbirds (0-1) will face five-time Canada West Champions, the Calgary Dinos (1-0), in their homecoming game at Thunderbird Stadium this Saturday.

The Dinos are coming off a convincing win last weekend after thumping their provincial rivals, the University of Alberta Golden Bears, by a 71-3 score.

The Thunderbirds will look to get their first win of the regular season and earn a measure of revenge from their last meetings with the Dinos - a 42-28 loss in last year's Canada West semi-final.

BCFC Week 8 preview

By Michiko Araki

The Raiders (3-3) will host the Okanagan Sun (5-1) this weekend at Caledonia Park as part of BCFC's Rivalry Week.

The Raiders come into this game on a high after pounding the Valley Huskers 81-6 last weekend in a game that saw Alex Kutra, Arthur Fabbro, Taylor Flavel, Ryan Chickite and Michael Ritchott all catch touchdown passes. The Raiders' Marshall Cook, who caught four balls for 95 yards and recorded two scores, will also be an important player in this weekend's game.

The Sun also had a double digit win over their opponent last weekend winning 31-10 against the Langley Rams. The Sun defense will look to slow down the Raiders using the momentum from their defence which forced seven turnovers, five interceptions and a turnover on downs twice against the Rams last week.

The Sun have beat the Raiders twice in their matchups this season.

Other games this week:

Kamloops Broncos at Westshore Rebels -
3 pm at Westhills Stadium

Valley Huskers at Langley Rams -
7 pm at McLeod Stadium
