"Experience of a lifetime"

This past Sunday, members of the GSL Lions (North Shore Football League) got the thrill of a lifetime when they were invited by the Seattle Seahawks down to CenturyLink Field to take part in the "Canada Day" festivities prior to the start of their game against the Denver Broncos.

The GSL Lions had an opportunity to take to the field and scrimmage on the same field where stars such as Russell Wilson, Marshawn Lynch, and Richard Sherman shine in front of the 12th Man.

The GSL Lions white ended up winning the scrimmage by a 21-14 score over the GSL Lions orange but it was clear all the players were winners on this day.

BC High School Football game of the week preview - Vancouver College Fighting Irish at Mt. Douglas Rams

By Michiko Araki

Friday, September 26
Goudy Field
Kickoff at 5 pm PT
Watch online at

In this weekend's featured match-up, two of the top-ranked teams will go head-to-head when the Vancouver College Fighting Irish (0-0) head to Victoria to face the Mt. Douglas Rams (1-0) at Goudy Field.

The Rams have been looking like strong contenders once again for this year's Subway Bowl Triple A championship and, if their regular season opener was any indication - a 36-7 win over Notre Dame last week - then they certainly look poised for a run at a fourth straight title despite losing some top talent to graduation. Led by new starting quarterback Joe Clarke, the Triple A player of the week, the Rams will look to continue to impress with their offensive abilities against Vancouver College. Wide receiver Gavin Cobb, who scored two touchdowns in last week's game, will also be a player to watch.

For the Fighting Irish, tailback Ovie Odjegba will be a player to keep an eye on. He recently broke a school record for longest touchdown score from scrimmage on a 90-yard run in a game against St. Thomas More. On defence, Matt Legge and Ethan Alban will be key players for the team, as they recorded 13 and 11 tackles respectively against O'Dea (Seattle) in a recent game.

SFU at Western Oregon preview

By Michiko Araki

Saturday, September 27
Pop Keeney Stadium
Kickoff at 6 pm PT
Watch online at

After a close game against the Azusa Pacific Tigers last weekend on the road, the Simon Fraser University Clan (0-3; 0-0 Conference) are crossing the border once again for the first-ever Battle of the Border event this weekend against the Central Washington Wildcats (1-2; 0-0 Conference).

The Wildcats, who scored 20 points in the fourth quarter in their close loss against Western Oregon last weekend, will be a team that should challenge the Clan continuously with their unpredictable scoring drives.

Several players to watch for the Wildcats include Tyrell Williams, who scored two touchdowns last week, and quarterback Jake Nelson, who set a career high for passing with 303 yards, two touchdowns, and recording 27-of-47 in the air.

As for the Clan's standout players, if there's one player who's been consistently delivering for the team, it's Jordan Herdman. In last week's game, Herdman recorded 20 tackles demonstrating he's an integral part in the Clan defense. As for offensive players, quarterback Ryan Stanford will look to connect with running back Cole Tudor, who has been successful at scoring touchdowns for the last two games, and receivers Kyle Kawamoto and Bobby Pospischil, who lead the team in receiving last week.

UBC vs. University of Alberta preview

By Michiko Araki

Saturday, September 27
UBC Thunderbird Stadium
Kickoff at 2 pm PT
Watch online at

The UBC Thunderbirds (0-3), still looking for a win this season, will be hosting the University of Alberta Golden Bears (1-2) this weekend at UBC Thunderbird Stadium.

In a historic moment last weekend, Golden Bears emerged victorious against the Regina Rams by a score of 44-42. This long-awaited win allowed them to snap their 26-game losing streak which spanned a long three years, 10 months and 14 days. The Golden Bears will look to ride this momentum and grab another win on the road against the Thunderbirds.

Notable players to watch in this matchup for the Golden Bears include quarterback Curtis Dell, who threw for the fourth-highest passing yards total in Golden Bears history two weeks ago with 413 yards.

As for the local lads, quarterback Carson Williams, who went 23-for-38 for 279 yards passing and one interception in last week's loss to the Manitoba Bisons, will be looking to team up with Alex Morrison, who led the receivers with seven catches for 108 yards, and Brandon Deschamps, who was the Thunderbirds' rushing leader last weekend with 37 yards on 13 carries.

BCFC Week 10 preview

By Michiko Araki

In a match-up of the top two teams in the league, the Langley Rams (6-2) will visit the Okanagan Sun (7-1) this week at the Apple Bowl in a potential Cullen Cup championship preview.

The game takes place on Sunday, September 28 at the Apple Bowl in Kelowna. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 pm.

With the season series is tied at 1-1 win apiece, this game has major playoff implications as first place. The top-seeded team will have the home turf advantage throughout the playoffs.

Nathan Lund will be a key offensive player for the Rams. Last week against the VI Raiders, Lund was able to show his versatility by scoring three touchdowns, one of them through the air.

For the Sun, Robbie Yochim will be a player to watch. Yochim recently broke the Canadian Junior Football League record for punt returns for touchdowns in a game, returning three punts for touchdowns in last week's game against the Westshore Rebels.

Other games this week
(all games on Saturday, Sept. 27):

Westshore Rebels at Valley Huskers - 1 pm, Exhibition Stadium

VI Raiders at Kamloops Broncos - 7 pm, Hillside Stadium
